What this trial studies
This is a comparative interventional project in rural Nepal that provides a one-day eye health orientation and referral slips to 58 Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) in Dipayal Silgadhi Municipality. The intervention group of FCHVs will be asked to refer eye patients to the nearest Vision Center, while a comparison Vision Center in Chainpur Bajhang will serve communities whose FCHVs do not receive the orientation. Investigators will compare numbers of people attending the two Vision Centers before and after the orientation to measure any change in footfall. The program is implemented by Seva Canada Society in collaboration with Geta Eye Hospital and focuses on real-world outreach and referral behavior rather than clinical treatment changes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are Female Community Health Volunteers who work in Dipayal Silgadhi Municipality and routinely interact with local residents.
Not a fit: FCHVs from other municipalities and community members who cannot access the local vision centers are unlikely to receive benefit from this local-oriented intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the orientation could increase community awareness and referrals, bringing more people with eye problems to timely care at the vision center.
How similar studies have performed: Training programs for community health volunteers are commonly used, but there is limited empirical evidence demonstrating consistent increases in clinic attendance from one-day eye health orientations.
