Observing lung disease caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria
Identification of Host Susceptibility Factors and Development of Biomarkers for Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Lung Disease
This study looks at how lung disease from nontuberculous mycobacteria affects older women who don't smoke, to better understand the disease and how to treat it.

What this trial studies
This observational study focuses on patients diagnosed with nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease, which has been increasingly recognized, particularly among nonsmoking elderly women without prior lung disease or immunodeficiency. The study aims to understand the characteristics and progression of this condition, as well as the complexities surrounding the initiation of antibiotic therapy. High-resolution CT scans are utilized to identify specific lung abnormalities associated with the disease. The findings will help inform clinical decisions regarding treatment options for affected patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients who meet the diagnostic criteria for nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease.
Not a fit: Patients without a diagnosis of nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease, potentially reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on nontuberculous mycobacterial infections, this specific observational approach to understanding lung disease characteristics is relatively novel.
