What this trial studies
This observational study aims to gather data on patients with severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) admitted to hospitals and intensive care units during the winter months in both hemispheres. It will involve a 5 to 7-day cohort study across 20 to 40 participating sites globally, collecting clinical information and sample data as part of routine clinical practice. The primary goal is to establish a research response capability for future epidemics or pandemics, while the secondary aim focuses on understanding the epidemiology and microbiology of SARI.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients with recent onset fever, cough, and either shortness of breath or rapid breathing requiring hospitalization.
Not a fit: Patients without symptoms of severe acute respiratory infection or those not requiring hospitalization may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance preparedness and response strategies for future respiratory infection outbreaks.
How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies on SARI have been crucial for understanding outbreaks, indicating that this approach has been effective in the past.
