Objective scar scoring system for traumatic hand injuries using ultrasound

Development of a Subcutaneous Scar Scoring System Via Ultrasonography and Its Association With Hand Function in Traumatic Hand Injured Patients

Observational National Cheng-Kung University Hospital · NCT04932109

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to develop a reliable and valid ultrasonographic scoring system for assessing subcutaneous scars in patients with traumatic hand injuries. The study is divided into two parts: the first part focuses on creating the scoring system and testing its reliability, while the second part applies this system to clinical cases and correlates the results with hand function measurements. Each scar will be evaluated multiple times over a month during routine rehabilitation to monitor changes. This approach seeks to enhance the objective assessment of scars and improve patient outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 20 years old with traumatic hand injuries that occurred between 8 weeks and one year prior.

Not a fit: Patients with burn injuries or those with impairments in peripheral or central nerve function may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a standardized method for evaluating scar healing and its impact on hand function, leading to better rehabilitation strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using ultrasonography for scar assessment is promising, it is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in similar studies.
