What this trial studies

This is a single-group pre-post quasi-experimental project enrolling about 52 parents of children aged 2–18 who require mechanical ventilation. Parents will use a proactive mobile health app that provides nurse-led symptom management support, with data collected by self-administered questionnaires before and after the intervention and by semi-structured interviews. Quantitative changes will be analyzed using generalized estimating equations and standard descriptive statistics, while qualitative interviews will undergo thematic analysis to identify facilitators and barriers. The protocol focuses on parental self-efficacy and implementation factors in a home-based care context.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are parents who live with a child aged 2–18 on mechanical ventilation, have a smartphone, can read and communicate in Chinese, and can access the internet at home.

Not a fit: Parents without a smartphone or internet access, those who cannot read Chinese, those with a reported mental health disorder, or those already enrolled in other structured symptom-management programs are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, parents may gain greater confidence and practical skills for home symptom management, potentially improving child outcomes and reducing urgent healthcare use.

How similar studies have performed: Prior work shows that increasing parental self-efficacy can improve child health, but nurse-led proactive mobile app programs for parents of ventilated children are relatively novel with limited large-scale evidence.
