Novel method for targeted brain stimulation

T-REEX: Phase Locked TRanscranial Electrical EXcitation

NA · Stichting IMEC-NL · NCT05847829

This study is testing a new way to use brain stimulation that targets specific brain waves to see if it works better than older methods for people who might benefit from non-invasive treatments.

What this trial studies

This study explores a new approach to transcranial current stimulation (tCS) that aims to enhance the precision of brain stimulation by using a closed-loop system. By phase-locking the stimulation to specific brain waves, the study seeks to improve the effectiveness of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. Participants will undergo stimulation using the T-REEX algorithm, which is designed to selectively target brain activity in both space and time. The goal is to demonstrate that this method can provide better control over stimulation effects compared to traditional open-loop configurations.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 to 64 who can provide informed consent and do not have any contraindications.

Not a fit: Patients with known neurological disorders, active implants, or skin sensitivities at the stimulation site may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to more effective non-invasive treatments for various neurological conditions.

How similar studies have performed: While the concept of closed-loop brain stimulation is gaining interest, this specific approach using the T-REEX algorithm is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
