Normal ranges for knee rotation in competitive pivot-sport athletes
Reference Values for Knee Rotational Amplitudes in a Population of Athletes
Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal de Toulon La Seyne sur Mer · NCT07013019
This project will measure overall knee rotation in healthy competitive pivot-sport athletes aged 15 and older to establish normal reference values.

What this trial studies
This is a multicenter observational effort combining retrospective and prospective data collection at two French sports medicine centers between 2022 and 2026. Healthy male and female athletes aged 15+ who compete in pivot sports will have overall (internal + external) knee rotational amplitudes measured using standardized clinical/dynamic arthrometer methods. Participants with prior knee ligament, meniscus, cartilage or bone injuries, current knee symptoms, or prior knee surgery are excluded. The goal is to define normative rotation ranges to help distinguish natural laxity from pathology.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Healthy competitive pivot-sport athletes aged 15 years and older with no history of knee injury or knee surgery are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People with previous knee ligament/meniscus/cartilage/bone injuries, current knee pain or instability, prior knee surgery, systemic musculoskeletal disease, or non-pivot-sport participants are unlikely to benefit from this reference-data project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, clinicians will have validated reference values for knee rotation to help recognize abnormal rotational laxity after ACL injury and guide diagnosis and rehabilitation.
How similar studies have performed: Previous research indicates the ACL significantly controls tibial rotation and that rotation increases after rupture, but comprehensive normative rotation ranges specifically in competitive pivot-sport athletes remain limited.
