New prostate MRI pathway to let trained radiographers make MRI decisions with computer support

NEWPROMRI-PATHWAY - A New Prostate Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Pathway

Observational University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust · NCT06672926

This project tests whether training radiographers and using a computerized decision-support system can let radiographers make prostate MRI decisions so men may need fewer contrast injections and fewer repeat scans.

What this trial studies

This observational project aims to capture radiologist decision knowledge and use it to support radiographers at two UK hospitals so they can make on-the-spot prostate MRI decisions. The team will use retrospective data from about 800 patients at each site and require experienced prostate MRI radiographers who complete study-specific online and hands-on training. The program pairs the trained radiographers with a computerized decision-support pathway to determine whether routine gadolinium contrast injections and repeat imaging appointments can be reduced. Outcomes focus on feasibility, adherence to decision rules, and potential to streamline imaging workflows.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Men referred for multiparametric prostate MRI at the participating hospitals (University Hospitals of North Midlands or University Hospitals of Derby and Burton) are the patients who would be affected by this pathway.

Not a fit: Patients who do not require multiparametric prostate MRI or who are treated outside the participating hospitals are unlikely to benefit from this project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, patients could have fewer gadolinium injections, fewer repeat scans, faster access to results, and a smoother imaging experience.

How similar studies have performed: Related efforts using radiographer-led workflows and computerized decision support for imaging have shown promise, but applying a radiologist-knowledge pathway to radiographers in prostate MRI is relatively novel.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria:

* MRI radiographers in University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) and or University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) with over 5 years' experience in MRI of the prostate.
* Radiographers from UHNM or UHDB who have completed an online and hands on study specific training materials before the testing phase.
* Retrospective data of 800 patients each from UHNM and UHDB who have had mpMRI and went on to have a biopsy.

Exclusion Criteria:

* Non-MRI radiographers.
