Muscle strength and joint flexibility in elite artistic swimmers across age groups
General Assessment of Strength and Mobility in Artistic Swimmers of the Spanish Swimming Federation
This project will test whether elite Spanish artistic swimmers in infant, junior, and senior categories have distinct joint mobility and isometric strength profiles that could help guide training and prevent injuries.

What this trial studies
This cross-sectional observational project will measure joint mobility and isometric muscle strength in elite Spanish artistic swimmers from infant, junior, and senior national teams during training camps using standardized, validated protocols. The study will analyze inter-limb asymmetries and agonist–antagonist strength ratios in upper and lower limbs and relate isometric strength to countermovement jump and handgrip performance. All participants will be tested during national team training camps at the University of Vigo, enabling comparison across competitive categories. The results aim to generate sport-specific functional profiles and identify potential markers of injury risk.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are elite artistic swimmers selected for the Spanish National Team (Infant 14–16, Junior 16–18, Senior ≥18) who attend the national team training camp and can provide informed consent (and parental consent for minors).
Not a fit: Swimmers with acute musculoskeletal injuries, chronic conditions limiting participation, recreational swimmers, or athletes not attending the national camp are unlikely to benefit directly from the results.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help coaches and medical teams tailor training and injury-prevention programs to each swimmer's strength and mobility profile.
How similar studies have performed: Similar profiling work in other sports and some swimming research has provided useful normative data and injury-risk markers, but comprehensive isometric strength and mobility profiles specific to elite artistic swimming are limited.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Elite artistic swimmers selected for the Spanish National Artistic Swimming Team (Infant, Junior, or Senior categories). * Age consistent with the competitive category: Infant 14-16 years, Junior 16-18 years, Senior ≥18 years. * Attendance at the national team training camp where the assessments are performed. * Voluntary participation with written informed consent (and assent/parental or legal guardian consent for minors). Exclusion Criteria: * Acute musculoskeletal or joint injury affecting the tested regions (shoulder, hip, elbow, knee) at the time of assessment. * Chronic, previous, or any other condition that may limit participation or bias the measurements. * Inability to attend the assessment session(s) during the training camp.
