What this trial studies
Healthy adults without diabetes or with non-diabetic hyperglycemia were assigned to receive either mulberry leaf extract capsules (DNJ 12 mg) or placebo three times daily for eight weeks. Safety labs (CBC, BUN, creatinine, AST, ALT, ALP), fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, and adverse events were measured at baseline and after 4 and 8 weeks, and participant satisfaction was recorded at 8 weeks. The primary focus is on tolerability and laboratory safety signals rather than therapeutic efficacy. Findings will inform whether further clinical testing is warranted in people with elevated blood sugar.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older without diagnosed diabetes (fasting glucose <126 mg/dL and HbA1c <6.5), able to use Thai and willing to attend visits at the Bangkok site are appropriate candidates.
Not a fit: People with diagnosed diabetes, on glucose-altering medications, with significant liver or kidney impairment, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If safe and well tolerated, the extract could become an accessible supplement option to help manage blood sugar in people without diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: Prior small trials of mulberry leaf (DNJ) have reported modest reductions in postprandial glucose, but larger, definitive clinical data remain limited.
