Monitoring the spread of drug-resistant infections in hospitals

Monitoring of MDRO Dynamics and Resistance Mechanisms in a University Hospital Network

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to survey the prevalence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) within a university hospital network. It involves taking rectal swabs from inpatients to cultivate and analyze the presence of MDRO, as well as documenting community-onset and nosocomial bloodstream infections. Clinical data will be collected for each infection case, including patient demographics and antibiotic therapy details. Additionally, the study will explore the genetic mechanisms of resistance and the impact of COVID-19 infection control measures on these infections.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are inpatients aged 18 and older who can provide informed consent.

Not a fit: Patients who are under 18 years old or those who are outpatients will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of MDRO dynamics and improve infection control strategies in hospitals.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in monitoring MDRO dynamics, making this approach both relevant and necessary in current healthcare settings.
