Mobility and strength before, and three and six months after, hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement

Mobility, Strength, and Functional Outcomes Before Surgery, at 3 Months, and at 6 Months

Observational University of Liege · NCT07472400

This project will see how mobility, strength, and functional task performance change before surgery and at three and six months after hip arthroscopy in people ages 18–40 with femoroacetabular impingement, comparing the operated hip to the other hip and to healthy volunteers.

What this trial studies

This is a controlled observational protocol that compares the pathological hip of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy to their contralateral healthy hip and to an external healthy control group. Participants will complete mobility and strength measures, functional performance tests, and questionnaires before surgery and again at three and six months postoperatively. The assessments are performed in-person at the Blanc Gravier sports centers associated with the University of Liège. Data will be used to map recovery trajectories and identify persistent deficits at key rehabilitation time points.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–40 with symptomatic, imaging-confirmed femoroacetabular impingement who are scheduled for hip arthroscopy, without prior hip surgery or recent muscle injuries, are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People with prior hip surgery, hip dysplasia, rheumatic or pediatric hip disease, recent injuries to assessed muscles, or those outside the 18–40 age range are unlikely to be appropriate or to benefit from the findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help clinicians target rehabilitation to speed recovery and reduce persistent functional deficits after hip arthroscopy.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational work has reported persistent strength and mobility deficits after hip arthroscopy, so this approach builds on existing evidence but focuses on direct comparison with the contralateral hip and healthy controls over three and six months.

Eligibility criteria

Exclusion Criteria:

* History of rheumatic disease, dysplasia or pediatric disease affecting the hip (Legg-Calvé; superior femoral epiphysiolysis)
* Subject who has already undergone surgery on the hip joint
* Subjects with a history of injury to the muscles involved in the assessments within the last year
