What this trial studies
This pilot provides oral pre‑exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) directly from a Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) linked to a Syringe Service Program (SSP), enrolling adults who inject drugs and/or are sexually active and HIV‑negative. Participants are referred from the SSP and receive PrEP initiation and follow‑up care on the van to measure feasibility, uptake, and retention. The program also gathers community perceptions of PrEP and perceived HIV risk through brief surveys or interviews with MMU visitors. The work is conducted by Duke University in Durham, NC as a Phase 4 interventional pilot.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) who actively inject drugs and/or are sexually active, are HIV‑negative, and are referred by or engage with the Syringe Service Program are the intended participants.
Not a fit: People who are HIV‑positive, under 18, unwilling to receive care on the mobile unit, or unable to access the MMU locations are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could increase PrEP access and reduce new HIV infections by delivering medication and care directly to people at high risk where they already receive services.
How similar studies have performed: Previous pilot programs offering PrEP via mobile clinics or through syringe service programs have shown promising uptake and engagement in some settings, but the evidence base is still limited.
