What this trial studies
This study evaluates the JoyPop mobile mental health app designed to support transitional-aged youth (TAY) aged 18-25 who are on wait-lists for mental health services in Northwestern Ontario. The app aims to improve emotion regulation and provide accessible mental health support during a critical transition period when traditional services may be lacking. Participants will receive the app alongside usual care practices, and those without an iOS device will be provided with a refurbished iPhone for the duration of the trial. The study seeks to address the significant mental health challenges faced by TAY in rural communities, where access to services is often limited.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are youth aged 18-25 who are on wait-lists for mental health services at designated centers.
Not a fit: Patients who are not on wait-lists for mental health services or those outside the age range of 18-25 may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this app could provide timely mental health support to young adults, potentially reducing distress and improving overall mental health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While mobile mental health applications have shown promise in various settings, this specific approach targeting TAY in rural areas is relatively novel and untested.
