What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness of a smartphone application designed to engage first-time caregivers in rural Guatemala, promoting optimal development for at-risk infants. By comparing the app's impact on caregiver practices and infant development against traditional paper materials, the study aims to assess improvements in developmental outcomes as measured by Bayley scores over an 18-month period. The intervention seeks to empower caregivers with tailored content and facilitate interactions with health workers when concerns arise, addressing the challenges faced in low- and middle-income countries.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are first-time caregivers of newborn infants aged 0-4 weeks who are literate and have infants born full-term.
Not a fit: Patients with acute malnutrition, severe medical conditions, or those requiring breastfeeding supplementation may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly enhance early childhood development outcomes for infants in low-resource settings.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies utilizing mobile health technologies for caregiver support have shown promise, indicating potential for success in this approach.
