What this trial studies
This study focuses on developing a culturally-appropriate smartphone application to assist women in managing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Nepal. Using a user-centered design approach, the app aims to promote self-management through education on diet and physical activity, while also providing clinicians with visual data displays to enhance decision-making. The study will assess the app's usability and preliminary efficacy among patients receiving antenatal care at a tertiary hospital. This innovative approach addresses the rising prevalence of GDM in low- and middle-income countries, where such interventions are currently lacking.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes who are receiving antenatal care at Dhulikhel Hospital and meet specific inclusion criteria.
Not a fit: Patients with learning difficulties or vision/hearing impairments may not benefit from this study due to the app's reliance on smartphone usage and comprehension of its content.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this app could significantly improve self-management of gestational diabetes, leading to better health outcomes for mothers and their children.
How similar studies have performed: While mobile health interventions for GDM management are not common in low- and middle-income countries, similar approaches have shown promise in other settings, indicating potential for success.
