What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a mobile application designed to support patients recovering at home after elective colorectal surgery. It aims to reduce unplanned hospital visits by providing an integrated discharge monitoring system. Patients will be randomly assigned to either a control group receiving standard follow-up care or an intervention group using the mobile app. The study will take place across three high-volume colorectal surgery centers in Canada over three years.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who are being discharged home after elective colorectal surgery.

Not a fit: Patients who are discharged to rehabilitation centers or have post-operative admissions of less than three days may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce hospital readmissions and improve the recovery experience for colorectal surgery patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous pilot studies have shown promising results for similar integrated discharge monitoring systems, suggesting potential for success in this larger trial.
