What this trial studies

This intervention focuses on high school students from marginalized communities who demonstrate resilience in academics but may face health and mental health challenges as a result. The study will randomly assign eligible BIPOC students to either the SOAR program, which provides academic skills training, or the STRIVE intervention, which offers mindfulness-based training aimed at improving emotion regulation and reducing stress. Over three academic years, the program will be led by diverse staff and will monitor participant enrollment and data collection to ensure effective implementation. The goal is to address the health disparities and internalizing symptoms that may arise from the pressures of academic achievement.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are high-achieving BIPOC students enrolled in 10th or 11th grade at participating high schools.

Not a fit: Students with intellectual disabilities may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could improve the mental and physical health outcomes of resilient students facing academic and racialized stress.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promise in using mindfulness interventions to improve mental health outcomes in similar populations, suggesting potential for success in this approach.
