What this trial studies
This study investigates the impact of a 15-minute Mindfulness Meditation session administered before primary unilateral total joint arthroplasty on patients' sleep quality. The effectiveness will be measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index at 2, 6, and 12 weeks post-surgery. Additionally, the study will assess pain levels and other sleep-related metrics to evaluate the overall benefits of mindfulness training in this surgical context. The hypothesis is that patients receiving mindfulness training will report better sleep quality compared to those who do not.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 to 90 who are scheduled for primary unilateral total joint arthroplasty.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing simultaneous total joint arthroplasties or those with a history of drug or alcohol abuse may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly enhance sleep quality for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While mindfulness interventions have shown promise in various settings, this specific application in joint arthroplasty is relatively novel and untested.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Patients undergoing primary unilateral total joint arthroplasty at Colorado Joint Replacement * Between the ages of 18 and 90 years old will be included in the study. Exclusion Criteria: * Simultaneous total joint arthroplasty * Uni-compartmental knee arthroplasty * Revision surgery for infection, fracture or other indication. * History of Drug or Alcohol Abuse * Patients who are unable to present at a standard pre-operative appointment within 4 weeks prior to scheduled surgery will also be excluded, as the MM intervention would not be possible to administer.
