What this trial studies

This pilot randomized control trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally tailored mindfulness intervention on cardiometabolic health in low-income Spanish-speaking Latina pregnant women. The study will involve 60 participants, with half receiving the mindfulness intervention and the other half serving as a wait-list control. The intervention focuses on improving fasting cardiometabolic factors and inflammatory gene expression, addressing health disparities in this population. The program is designed based on feedback from focus groups and includes both live classes and digital content in Spanish and English.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are low-income, Spanish-speaking Latina women who are in their first or second trimester of a singleton pregnancy.

Not a fit: Patients who have a regular mindfulness practice or a diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve maternal cardiometabolic health and reduce health disparities among Latina women.

How similar studies have performed: While research on mindfulness interventions has shown promise in non-Hispanic White populations, this approach is novel for low-income Spanish-speaking Latina women and has not been extensively tested.
