Microplastic exposure and progression of stomach precancerous changes
Association of Microplastic Exposure With Pathological Stages of Gastric Mucosal Carcinogenesis: A Cross-Sectional Study
This project will test if adults with higher microplastic exposure are more likely to have precancerous stomach changes or gastric cancer.

What this trial studies
This observational study will group adults into chronic non-atrophic gastritis, precancerous lesions, and gastric cancer based on endoscopy and/or biopsy findings. Researchers will collect demographic data, Helicobacter pylori status, and a structured questionnaire measuring external microplastic exposure and sources. The analysis will compare exposure scores across the three groups and use statistical models to see if microplastic exposure is an independent risk factor for gastric mucosal carcinogenesis. Patients with recent diagnoses who can complete the questionnaire in person at the study center are eligible, while those with prior other malignancies, major organ failure, recent upper GI surgery, or incomplete data are excluded.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18–75 with a recent clear diagnosis of chronic non-atrophic gastritis, gastric precancerous lesions, or gastric cancer and known H. pylori test results who can complete an in-person questionnaire.
Not a fit: People with prior other cancers, past upper gastrointestinal surgery, recent chemo/radiation, severe major-organ disease, pregnancy or lactation, or incomplete clinical/questionnaire data are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If a link is found, identifying microplastic exposure as a modifiable risk factor could guide prevention and public-health measures to lower gastric cancer risk.
How similar studies have performed: This approach is relatively novel in humans: animal and environmental studies suggest microplastics can affect gut tissue, but direct human links to gastric cancer remain largely unestablished.
