Measuring water turnover in Chinese adults using deuterium dilution

Study on Water Turnover of the Chinese Population Based on Deuterium Dilution Method

Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology ,Chinese Academy of Sciences · NCT07028021

What this trial studies

This observational project measures total body water turnover in Chinese adults using the deuterium dilution technique alongside standard body composition and height measures. Participants provide a baseline urine sample after an overnight fast, drink a calculated dose of deuterated water, and give follow-up urine samples three and four hours later to calculate total body water. Height is measured with a Seca 217 stadiometer and body composition with a TANITA MC-780, while physical activity is monitored by a GT3 accelerometer worn near the hip for seven days. Daily water intake is recorded over the monitoring period and participants with chronic diseases, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or diuretic use are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are healthy Chinese adults with stable body weight who can attend in-person visits in Beijing and are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking diuretics.

Not a fit: People with chronic diseases affecting fluid balance, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, and those on medications that change urine output are unlikely to directly benefit from this observational protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could support more personalized hydration recommendations and reduce risks tied to under- or over-hydration.

How similar studies have performed: Deuterium dilution is a well-established gold-standard method for measuring total body water, though using it to derive personalized population-wide intake guidelines remains relatively limited.
