What this trial studies
This observational study aims to gather normative data on sweat sodium concentration, whole body sweat rate, and sweat sodium loss in female athletes aged 13 and older during their regular training sessions across various sports. Utilizing the standardized Gatorade Sports Sciences Institute sweat testing protocol, the study will employ absorbent sweat patches to measure local sweat sodium levels, which will be normalized to whole-body sweat sodium. Additionally, changes in body mass pre- and post-training will be used to calculate whole-body sweat rate, while secondary outcomes will assess hydration status and menstrual cycle phase.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are female athletes aged 13 and above who are actively participating in sports at any level.
Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those with allergies to adhesives or those not cleared for sport participation by a physician.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable insights into hydration and electrolyte loss in female athletes, potentially improving performance and health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on sweat rates and sodium loss, this specific focus on female athletes and the use of standardized protocols represents a novel approach.
