Measuring intercostal muscle oxygenation during exercise tests
Effect of Different Exercise Capacity Tests on Intercostal Muscle Oxygenation
This study is testing how two different exercise tests affect the oxygen levels in the muscles between the ribs of healthy young adults aged 18-25.

What this trial studies
This study aims to assess how different exercise capacity tests affect intercostal muscle oxygenation. A total of 32 healthy young adults aged 18-25 will participate, undergoing either a six-minute walking test or an incremental shuttle walking test. The study will measure heart rate, oxygen saturation, and fatigue levels before and after the tests, while monitoring intercostal muscle oxygen levels using the MOXY device. Participants will switch groups after a washout period to evaluate the effects of both tests on muscle oxygenation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are healthy young adults aged 18-35 with a BMI under 25 who do not smoke and have no significant health issues.
Not a fit: Patients with systemic, orthopedic, or cardiopulmonary diseases, as well as smokers, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of muscle oxygenation during exercise, potentially improving exercise testing protocols for patients with respiratory or circulatory limitations.
How similar studies have performed: While this study explores a specific aspect of muscle oxygenation, similar studies have shown promise in understanding exercise physiology, suggesting potential for valuable insights.
