Mapping how children develop spatial hearing in different environments

Development of Functional Spatial Hearing in Reverberation

Early Phase 1 Interventional Father Flanagan's Boys' Home · NCT05815537

What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to explore the development of functional spatial hearing abilities in children aged 6 to 18 years with normal hearing. Participants will engage in psychoacoustic tasks in virtual acoustic environments that simulate varying levels of reverberation. The study will compare the performance of these children to that of normal-hearing adults to understand the maturation of spatial hearing skills. The intervention involves random assignment to either a low-reverberation or high-reverberation environment to assess the impact on auditory perception.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are typically developing children aged 6 to 18 years with normal hearing.

Not a fit: Patients who have hearing impairments or diagnosed intellectual developmental disabilities may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance our understanding of spatial hearing development, potentially leading to improved auditory training programs for children.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, similar studies have shown success in understanding auditory perception in children.
