Effect of Consuming a Mango and Chia-based Beverage on Modulating the Intestinal Microbiota in Obese Children
NA · Universidad Nacional de Caaguazu · NCT07529119

What this trial studies
This randomized interventional trial will enroll 100 children in Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay and assign them to consume a mango-and-chia beverage or a comparison mango beverage for six weeks. Participants will provide fecal samples before and after the intervention, and microbiota composition will be analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. The project aims to characterize gut microbiota in Paraguayan children and determine whether the functional beverage can favorably modulate intestinal bacteria. Results will inform whether a simple dietary beverage could be explored further as a strategy related to childhood obesity.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Paraguayan children aged 8–16 with obesity who can consume mango and chia and provide stool samples are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Children who are allergic to mango or chia (and therefore cannot participate) will not benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the beverage might shift gut microbiota toward a profile associated with healthier metabolism and weight in children with obesity.
How similar studies have performed: Prior fiber- and fruit-based dietary interventions have produced modest changes in gut microbiota, but using a mango-and-chia beverage in Paraguayan children is a novel application.
