What this trial studies
LUNG-ROLL is a retrospective cohort using provincial administrative health data from Alberta and Ontario beginning January 1, 2018 to describe contemporary treatment patterns, incidence and prevalence, patient demographics, clinical outcomes, and healthcare resource use and costs among people with lung cancer. Eligible patients are adults diagnosed with lung cancer who had at least 12 months of health insurance coverage before diagnosis and who were residents of Alberta or Ontario at diagnosis, with several exclusions for prior or concurrent other cancers and incomplete records. The study will use linked administrative datasets to capture treatments, hospital and outpatient care, and cost-related billing records to quantify resource use. Results will be presented as summary statistics and temporal trends to inform clinicians, health system planners, and policymakers about real-world care and cost drivers.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) diagnosed with lung cancer on or after January 1, 2018 who were residents of Alberta or Ontario at diagnosis and had at least 12 months of prior health insurance coverage, without other cancers in the five years before 2018 or on the same diagnosis date, are included.
Not a fit: People who live outside Alberta or Ontario, were diagnosed before 2018, lack sufficient insurance or administrative records, or have concurrent/very recent other cancers are not represented and are unlikely to benefit directly from this study's findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help health systems and clinicians understand real-world treatment patterns and cost drivers to improve resource planning and patient care.
How similar studies have performed: Similar retrospective administrative database studies of lung cancer have been used successfully to describe treatment patterns, outcomes, and costs and to inform policy, though findings vary by region and data completeness.
