Lung Health Check Pilot
The Lung Health Check Pilot
This pilot tries to see if offering a lung health check—including lung function tests and a low-dose CT scan—can find lung cancer early in people aged 55–74 who currently smoke or used to smoke in Ireland.

What this trial studies
The pilot invites people aged 55–74 who are current or former smokers and referred by their GP to undergo a lung health check consisting of lung function tests and a low-dose CT scan. Participants are selected using established lung cancer risk scores (PLCOM2012 ≥ 1.51% or LLPv2 ≥ 2.5%) and are excluded if they had a chest CT in the last 12 months or have recent advanced cancers, recent lung cancer, or cannot undergo non-contrast CT. The programme is delivered at Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre and focuses on detecting lung cancer before symptoms develop so disease can be treated earlier. This is a feasibility pilot to see if this screening pathway can be implemented in Ireland and to refine processes for larger rollout.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people aged 55–74 who currently smoke or formerly smoked, have a sufficient calculated lung-cancer risk (PLCOM2012 ≥1.51% or LLPv2 ≥2.5%), and are referred by their GP.
Not a fit: People outside the 55–74 age range, never-smokers, those who had a chest CT in the past 12 months, residents of nursing homes, or those unable to undergo or attend CT visits are unlikely to benefit from this pilot.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the programme could detect lung cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage and thereby reduce deaths from the disease.
How similar studies have performed: Large trials such as the NLST and major European studies have shown low-dose CT screening can reduce lung cancer mortality by about 20–26%, so this approach has proven effectiveness elsewhere.
