Adaptation and Pilot Testing of a Lung Cancer Screening Decision Aid for Patients From a Safety-Net Healthcare System

Not applicable Interventional M.D. Anderson Cancer Center · NCT07382557

What this trial studies

The project first culturally and linguistically adapts an existing lung cancer screening video decision aid and written materials for low‑health‑literacy English and Spanish speakers served by a safety‑net system. Investigators will survey providers, run patient focus groups, and conduct cognitive interviews to refine the materials. In phase two, eligible patients will be randomized to view the adapted video decision aid or a control condition to measure acceptability and effects on decision-making outcomes. Outcomes include patient understanding, decision quality, and acceptability of the materials.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are English- or Spanish-speaking adults aged 50–80 who are current smokers or quit within the past 15 years, have no history of lung cancer, and are connected to the participating safety‑net healthcare system (and may include family members of someone with a history of smoking and lung cancer).

Not a fit: People outside the 50–80 age range, never-smokers, non-English/Spanish speakers, or those with a prior lung cancer diagnosis are unlikely to benefit from these adapted decision aids.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, patients could receive clearer, culturally relevant information that improves understanding and supports better decisions about lung cancer screening.

How similar studies have performed: Prior decision aids for lung cancer screening have improved patient knowledge and decision quality, but thorough cultural and low‑literacy adaptations for safety‑net populations have been less commonly tested.
