Low intensity training with blood flow restriction for rheumatoid arthritis patients

The Effects Of Low Intensity Training With Blood Flow Restriction In The Lower And Upper Limbs On Muscle Strength, Muscle Mass, Biochemical Parameters And Markers Of Systemic Inflammation In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Not applicable Interventional Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul · NCT05869370

What this trial studies

This study investigates the effects of low intensity resistance training combined with blood flow restriction on patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Given that high intensity resistance training may not be tolerated by these patients due to joint issues, the study aims to explore whether a lower intensity approach can still improve muscle strength and mass without exacerbating their condition. Participants will undergo ergospirometry to assess their cardiorespiratory fitness before engaging in the training regimen. The goal is to determine if this novel training strategy can enhance physical function in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are female patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis who can safely participate in the training program.

Not a fit: Patients with fibromyalgia or cardiovascular disease may not benefit from this study due to exclusion criteria.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could improve muscle strength and physical function in rheumatoid arthritis patients without worsening their symptoms.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of low intensity training with blood flow restriction in rheumatoid arthritis is novel, similar training methods have shown promise in other populations.
