What this trial studies
The IONA Longitudinal Cohort Study aims to gather extensive data on cognitive health, lifestyle, and health risk factors related to dementia among individuals aged 50 and above in Scotland. This observational study will create a well-characterized cohort that reflects the Scottish population, focusing on understanding the development of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. By collecting information on genetics, disease biomarkers, and cognitive assessments over several years, the study seeks to build disease models that can identify different disease trajectories and sub-populations. The ultimate goal is to enhance the precision of diagnostics and therapies for dementia.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 50 and older living in Scotland who can provide informed consent and have a study partner.
Not a fit: Patients under 50 years of age or those who do not meet the educational and language requirements may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and treatment options for dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies focusing on large, real-world cohorts have shown promise in understanding dementia, making this approach both relevant and potentially impactful.
