What this trial studies

This intervention aims to improve the livelihoods of displaced and refugee youth in Kampala, Uganda, who face significant health risks due to financial insecurity. The program, called Creating Futures, is designed to help young people aged 16-25 build their livelihoods while also addressing urgent needs for HIV testing and care. By utilizing health promotion techniques such as mobile health (mHealth) and HIV self-testing (HIVST), the study seeks to enhance access to HIV testing and linkage to care among this vulnerable population. The intervention will be implemented in selected informal settlements in Kampala, focusing on innovative strategies to overcome barriers to HIV testing.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this intervention are displaced persons or refugees aged 16-25 living in specific informal settlements in Kampala who have access to a mobile phone.

Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as displaced persons or refugees, or those outside the age range of 16-25, may not benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve the health and social functioning of refugee youth by increasing access to HIV testing and care.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on similar interventions specifically targeting refugee youth in Uganda, the use of HIV self-testing has shown promise in other contexts for increasing testing rates.
