What this trial studies

Pregnant women over 20 weeks without multiple or high-risk pregnancies were enrolled and assigned to one of three groups: laughter yoga, Pilates, or standard childbirth education. The study measured pregnancy adjustment, anxiety, and prenatal attachment before and after the intervention. Participants with major medical or mental health issues, fetal anomalies, or prior intra-abdominal surgery were excluded. Interventions were delivered in person at the Istanbul University - Cerrahpasa site in Kastamonu.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Pregnant women more than 20 weeks gestation who do not have multiple or high-risk pregnancies, fetal anomalies, major mental illness, or physical disabilities and who can attend in-person sessions are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Women with multiple or high-risk pregnancies, significant medical or psychiatric conditions, fetal anomalies or intrauterine growth restriction, prior intra-abdominal surgery, or those unable to attend sessions are unlikely to benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If effective, these low-cost, nonpharmacologic activities could reduce anxiety and improve maternal adjustment and bonding during pregnancy.

How similar studies have performed: Prior small studies of prenatal exercise and yoga have shown some reductions in anxiety and improved mood or attachment, but laughter yoga is less well studied and overall evidence is limited and mixed.
