Investigation of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Outbreaks in Healthcare Settings
Transmission and Acquisition of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Outbreak Investigation (TrANsMIt)

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to standardize the investigation of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) outbreaks in healthcare facilities. It will analyze respiratory NTM isolates from patients to determine if they are genetically related, indicating potential patient-to-patient transmission. The study will also assess environmental samples to identify sources of NTM acquisition. Participants will complete a demographic questionnaire to support the epidemiological investigation. The research utilizes whole genome sequencing to identify clusters of infections and adapt CDC guidelines for outbreak investigations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals of any age with a history of nontuberculous mycobacteria or a first positive NTM culture from clinical care.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have a respiratory culture indicating nontuberculous mycobacteria will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the understanding of NTM transmission in healthcare settings, leading to improved infection control measures.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have successfully utilized whole genome sequencing for outbreak investigations, suggesting this approach may yield valuable insights.
