What this trial studies
This study consists of two phases aimed at understanding and treating urinary incontinence in Brazilian female runners. The first phase involves a survey to assess the prevalence of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunctions among female runners. The second phase evaluates the effectiveness of three different exercise regimens: pelvic floor muscle training with abdominal training, hypopressive abdominal exercises, and pelvic floor muscle training alone. The primary outcome is the severity of urinary incontinence, measured through a pad test and bladder diary over a 12-week intervention period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are female runners who have been running for at least six months, run a minimum of 15 kilometers per week, and experience involuntary urinary leakage during running.
Not a fit: Patients with diagnosed neuromuscular diseases affecting bladder function or those who have had previous surgeries or physical therapy for pelvic floor dysfunctions may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide effective exercise-based treatments for urinary incontinence in female runners, improving their quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on similar studies specifically targeting female runners, exercise interventions for urinary incontinence have shown promise in other populations.
