What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the potential relationship between Covid-19 infection and the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in newly diagnosed adult patients. The study will involve clinical assessments and epidemiological follow-ups over a two-year period, focusing on patients diagnosed with T1D in Denmark and Portugal. Participants will undergo standard diagnostic procedures and mixed meal tolerance tests to evaluate beta-cell function at diagnosis and after one year. The research seeks to understand whether Covid-19 may trigger autoimmune responses leading to T1D.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who have been newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes according to standard medical criteria.
Not a fit: Patients with severe psychiatric disorders or other conditions that impair informed consent will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into the mechanisms linking viral infections like Covid-19 to the onset of type 1 diabetes, potentially guiding prevention strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While the relationship between viral infections and type 1 diabetes has been explored, this specific investigation into Covid-19's impact is novel and untested.
