Investigating RSV infection in COPD exacerbations
Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection in Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diasease: the RECODE Study
This study looks at how common RSV infections are in people with COPD during flare-ups and how these infections affect their health outcomes.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to determine the prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during exacerbations occurring in the RSV season from October to April. It will evaluate the association between RSV infection and clinical outcomes, such as hospitalization rates, length of stay, acute cardiovascular events, and mortality. Researchers will compare outcomes in patients with RSV infection to those without to assess the impact of RSV on COPD exacerbations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 50 and older with a diagnosis of COPD who are seeking urgent medical attention for acute exacerbations.
Not a fit: Patients with active cancer, significant neurologic disorders, or those who have received RSV vaccination will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of COPD exacerbations associated with RSV infection.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific association of RSV with COPD exacerbations is less explored, similar studies have shown that viral infections can significantly impact respiratory conditions, indicating potential for meaningful insights.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Female or male * ≥50 years of age * Seeking urgent medical attention because of ECOPD, as defined by the Rome consensus definition: "in a patient with COPD, an exacerbation is an event characterized by dyspnea and/or cough and sputum that worsen over \<14 d, which may be accompanied by tachypnoea and/or tachycardia and is often associated with increased local and systemic inflammation caused by airway infection, pollution, or other insult to the airways" Exclusion Criteria: * Previous RSV vaccination (other vaccines will be allowed and recorded) * Active cancer (or any other disease) that may alter the immune status of the patient * Neurologic disorders that incapacitate the participation of the patient * No signing of the informed consent
