Investigating mitochondrial dysfunction in primary progressive multiple sclerosis
Assessing the Role of Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
This study is trying to find out if certain genetic changes in mitochondria are linked to primary progressive multiple sclerosis to help understand the disease better.

What this trial studies
This project aims to explore the genetic factors contributing to mitochondrial impairment in patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis. The study will identify mitochondrial-related pathways and assess both inherited and somatic mitochondrial DNA mutations associated with the condition. By understanding these genetic alterations, the research seeks to shed light on the neurodegenerative processes underlying this form of multiple sclerosis, which currently lacks effective treatment options.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients diagnosed with primary progressive or relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis who can provide informed consent.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those not affected by primary progressive or relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to new insights and potential therapeutic targets for treating primary progressive multiple sclerosis.
How similar studies have performed: While the investigation of mitochondrial dysfunction in multiple sclerosis is a growing area of interest, this specific approach focusing on genetic determinants is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
