Investigating lung complications after kidney stone surgery
The Effect of Intraoperative Position and Mechanical Power on Postoperative Pulmonary Complications in Adult PNL(Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) Patients
This study is testing how different positions during kidney stone surgery affect lung function and the risk of breathing problems afterward for patients undergoing this procedure.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore how different surgical positions (supine and prone) affect lung mechanical power and its correlation with postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) under general anesthesia. PNL is a minimally invasive procedure preferred for treating larger kidney stones. The study will calculate mechanical power during ventilation, which is linked to the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury and postoperative complications. By analyzing these factors, the study seeks to improve patient outcomes following PNL.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults scheduled for elective percutaneous nephrolithotomy with an ASA classification of 1 to 3.
Not a fit: Patients with severe respiratory issues, high BMI, or other significant comorbidities may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved surgical practices that reduce the risk of lung complications in patients undergoing kidney stone surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, previous research has indicated that optimizing mechanical ventilation can reduce postoperative complications.
