Investigating hypercalcemia caused by paraffin oil injections
Hypercalcemia After Paraffin Oil Injection: Aetiology, Pathogenesis and Possible Treatment Options

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to understand the health risks associated with the injection of paraffin oil into skeletal muscles, particularly among young men seeking cosmetic enhancements. It will involve a large group of participants who have injected varying amounts of paraffin oil, focusing on identifying risk factors for developing hypercalcemia and exploring the underlying mechanisms of the condition. The study will also culture granuloma tissue from selected patients to investigate the production of activated vitamin D and parathyroid hormone-related peptide. The findings could provide insights into the pathogenesis of hypercalcemia linked to cosmetic procedures.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are young men who have previously injected paraffin oil into their bodies.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to walk or have incurable cancer may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better awareness and management of hypercalcemia in patients who have undergone paraffin oil injections.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been case reports on this issue, this study represents a novel approach to understanding the broader implications of paraffin oil injections and their health risks.
