Investigating glucose intolerance and diabetes in children with leukemia and lymphoma treated with steroids and PEG-asparaginase
Glucose Intolerance and Diabetes Related to Treatment With Steroids and PEG- Asparaginase in Children and Adolescents With ALL and Lymphoma
This study is testing how steroid treatments for leukemia and lymphoma affect blood sugar levels in children and teens to help improve their care.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the incidence and severity of glucose intolerance and diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents aged 1 to 17.9 years who are undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or lymphoma. The research focuses on the effects of steroid medications, such as dexamethasone or prednisolone, and PEG-asparaginase on blood glucose levels. By understanding these side effects, the study seeks to inform new treatment guidelines for managing glucose levels during therapy, ultimately aiming to reduce acute toxicities and improve quality of life for patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children and adolescents diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or lymphoma who are receiving established treatment protocols in Denmark.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have a diagnosis of ALL or lymphoma, or those not receiving the specified treatment protocols, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management of glucose levels in children undergoing treatment for ALL and lymphoma, enhancing their overall health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While the study addresses a known issue in pediatric oncology, the specific focus on glucose intolerance related to the combination of steroids and PEG-asparaginase is relatively novel.
