Investigating genetic factors in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy
Is There a Genetic Predisposition for Acute Stress-induced (Takotsubo) Cardiomyopathy: The GENETIC Study
This study is trying to see if certain genes make some people more likely to develop broken heart syndrome after experiencing acute stress.

What this trial studies
This study aims to explore whether there is a genetic predisposition that makes certain individuals more susceptible to acute stress-induced (takotsubo) cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome. The researchers will collect blood samples from patients diagnosed with this condition in Scotland since 2010 and conduct a genome-wide association study to identify potential genetic variants. By understanding the genetic and epidemiologic factors associated with this disorder, the study seeks to advance knowledge in this area and potentially benefit affected families.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients diagnosed with takotsubo cardiomyopathy in Scotland from 2010 onwards and familial cases willing to participate.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have takotsubo cardiomyopathy or are unwilling to participate will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to better understanding and management of takotsubo cardiomyopathy, potentially improving patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically on the genetic predisposition for takotsubo cardiomyopathy, studies on related conditions have shown promising results in understanding genetic factors.
