Investigating fat accumulation in muscles of patients with esophageal and gastric cancer
Myosteatosis in Oeso-gastric Cancer: Clinical Impacts
This study is trying to see if fat buildup in muscles affects people with esophageal and gastric cancer, and how it might relate to their overall health and treatment options.

What this trial studies
This project aims to explore the presence of cancer-associated adipocytes in esophageal and gastric cancers and their potential links to myosteatosis. It includes a retrospective analysis of imaging data to determine the incidence of myosteatosis in patients with these cancers, alongside a prospective component that collects biological samples for histological, molecular, and genomic analyses. The study will also assess muscle function in these patients, focusing on the interactions between adipocytes in the tumor microenvironment and muscle quality. Ultimately, the research seeks to identify pathways and targets for treatment that could benefit patients with esophageal and gastric cancer.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 with esophageal or gastric cancer who are expected to survive more than three months and can provide informed consent.
Not a fit: Patients with neuromuscular or orthopedic pathologies, cognitive or psychiatric disorders, or those unable to communicate in French or English may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved treatment strategies for patients with esophageal and gastric cancer by identifying critical factors influencing their recovery.
How similar studies have performed: While the role of cancer-associated adipocytes has been studied in other cancers, this specific investigation into their impact on myosteatosis in esophageal and gastric cancer is relatively novel.
