Investigating decision-making and CPAP adherence in sleep apnea patients

Effort-based Decision-making as a Possible Predictor of Poor Adherence to CPAP Treatment in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

What this trial studies

This study focuses on patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to explore the relationship between effort-based decision-making and adherence to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment. It aims to assess cognitive functions, particularly how decision-making processes may affect patients' ability to adhere to CPAP therapy. Participants will undergo cognitive evaluations at the time of diagnosis and again after six months of CPAP use to identify any changes and correlations. The study includes a control group for comparative analysis.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.

Not a fit: Patients with a BMI of 35 or higher, significant cognitive impairment, or other complex sleep or psychiatric disorders may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve adherence to CPAP therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, leading to better health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on CPAP adherence, this specific focus on effort-based decision-making in relation to cognitive function is relatively novel.
