Investigating blood glucose variability in type 2 diabetes patients with COVID-19

Characteristics of Blood Glucose Variability in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Complicated With COVID-19 and Its Effect on the Prognosis of the Disease

Observational Qilu Hospital of Shandong University · NCT06156137

This study is testing how blood sugar levels change in people with type 2 diabetes who have COVID-19 to see if understanding these changes can help improve their treatment and recovery.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to analyze blood glucose variability in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who are also suffering from COVID-19 pneumonia. By utilizing intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM), the study will collect clinical data and various glucose variability parameters to understand their impact on disease progression and patient prognosis. The goal is to identify a clinically practical time-in-range (TIR) threshold that can guide treatment adjustments, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing hospital stays and medical costs.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are currently hospitalized with mild to critical COVID-19 pneumonia.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have type 2 diabetes or COVID-19 pneumonia will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management strategies for T2DM patients with COVID-19, enhancing their recovery and overall health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While studies on glucose variability in diabetes are common, this specific focus on T2DM patients with COVID-19 pneumonia is relatively novel and untested.
