What this trial studies

This observational study aims to determine if arterial stiffness, measured by Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV), is an independent risk factor for acute kidney injury in patients with sepsis. It will compare PWV with shear wave ultrasound elastography (SWE) as methods for evaluating arterial stiffness and predicting kidney injury. The study will collect demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from adult patients admitted to the critical care unit with sepsis. Comprehensive assessments will include vital signs, fluid status, and various laboratory tests to evaluate organ function.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult patients admitted to the critical care unit with a diagnosis of sepsis.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old, those with end-stage renal disease, or those who cannot be scanned within 24 hours of ICU admission will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved risk assessment and management strategies for sepsis patients, potentially reducing the incidence of acute kidney injury.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of using PWV in sepsis is being explored, similar studies have shown promise in evaluating arterial stiffness as a risk factor in other conditions.
