What this trial studies

This prospective cohort will enroll adults admitted to St Ita's Rehabilitation Hospital in the Mid-West of Ireland and collect demographic, clinical, and process outcome data during admission, at discharge, and at six months. Functional measures, patient-reported outcome measures, and resource-use indicators will be recorded to characterize patient complexity and recovery trajectories across a broad range of conditions. Analyses will describe clinical characteristics, care pathways, and factors associated with better or worse outcomes. Results will be used to inform local resource planning and to quantify benefits of specialist rehabilitation services in this region.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 and over who are admitted to the relevant inpatient rehabilitation unit and have capacity to provide consent are the intended participants.

Not a fit: Pregnant women and patients who are judged not to have capacity to consent are excluded and would not be eligible to participate or benefit from the study's enrollment-based findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help align rehabilitation resources with patient complexity, improve service planning, and support better recovery and quality of life for patients.

How similar studies have performed: International cohort studies and health-system analyses have shown benefits and cost-effectiveness of specialist rehabilitation services, so this project builds on established evidence rather than testing a novel therapy.
