Innovative technique for reconstructing the soft palate
Functional Soft Palate Reconstruction
University Hospital, Basel, Switzerland · NCT06143280

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate a new dynamic technique for soft palate reconstruction that combines free radial flap plasty with the displacement of the digastric muscle. The focus is on patients who have undergone tumor resection in the soft palate and are receiving this innovative reconstruction method. The study will analyze functional outcomes related to speech and swallowing, comparing results with existing literature to assess improvements. Data collection will include postoperative complications and the effectiveness of the reconstruction technique in restoring normal function.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients who have had tumor resections of the soft palate and are undergoing reconstruction using the described dynamic technique.
Not a fit: Patients who have undergone oropharyngeal carcinoma resection without the dynamic reconstruction technique will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this technique could significantly improve speech and swallowing functions for patients recovering from soft palate tumors.
How similar studies have performed: While this specific technique is novel, similar approaches in reconstructive surgery have shown promising results in improving functional outcomes.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Patients after tumor resection of the soft palate with reconstruction by a free radial flap and displacement of the digastric muscle. Exclusion Criteria: * Patients with resected oropharyngeal carcinoma but without reconstruction using the dynamic technique described are excluded from the study.
