Information sheet for parents after a child's first simple febrile seizure

Impact d'Une Fiche Explicative donnée Aux Parents après Une première Consultation Pour Crise fébrile Simple au Service d'Accueil Des Urgences pédiatriques du CHU de Strasbourg

Observational University Hospital, Strasbourg, France · NCT07335640

What this trial studies

At Strasbourg University Hospital's pediatric emergency unit, researchers are observing children aged 9 months to 5 years who present with a first or second simple febrile seizure between January 1, 2022 and May 1, 2025. An explanatory information sheet was implemented at the SAUP in July 2023, and the study compares rates of return visits for recurrent simple febrile seizures and early consultations for isolated fever before and after that implementation. Eligible patients must meet clinical criteria for simple febrile seizure (generalized seizure <15 minutes, no postictal deficit, no recurrence within 24 hours) and have a parent present at the consultation. Outcomes focus on emergency return visit rates and indicators of parental anxiety reflected by early fever presentations.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Children aged 9 months to 5 years presenting to the CHU de Strasbourg pediatric emergency unit with a first or second simple febrile seizure and with at least one parent present are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Children with focal or prolonged seizures, non-febrile seizures, prior neurological disorders, age outside 9 months–5 years, or more than two prior simple febrile seizures are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could reduce unnecessary emergency visits and lower parental anxiety about fevers and seizures.

How similar studies have performed: Previous parent-education programs about fever and febrile seizures have generally reduced anxiety and unnecessary care, though effects vary by format and setting.
