What this trial studies

This study investigates the effects of increased Greek yogurt consumption on bone metabolism and inflammation in youth and young adult athletes. It compares the impact of Greek yogurt with whey protein supplementation, a common practice among athletes, to determine which has a more beneficial effect on peak bone mass. The study will recruit a total of 80 athletes, divided into groups based on age and gender, and will involve chronic high-impact exercise training alongside dietary interventions. Participants will undergo health screenings and be randomly assigned to either the Greek yogurt or whey protein group.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are competitive youth or varsity athletes aged 15-22 who are not injured and do not have dairy allergies or lactose intolerance.

Not a fit: Patients who are injured, have a dairy allergy, or are lactose intolerant may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance bone health and reduce inflammation in young athletes, potentially improving their performance and long-term health.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific combination of Greek yogurt and exercise in this context may be novel, similar studies have shown positive outcomes with dairy consumption and protein supplementation in athletes.
